Why Utility Companies Disconnect Customers

Guyanese complain constantly about the Utility companies that supply services of Water, Electricity and Telephone. They cry out for over charging, bad service and disconnection. In business they say that the customer is always right. But are they?

GPL Disconnections

Lets take for instance GPL whose repetition is famous with BLACK OUT  that the conductors on the Route 45 Mini-Bus say "Gimme Black Out Deh" whenever a passenger ask to stop at GPL. 

Bills Pass Due - Everyone knows that GPL disconnect customers who owe bills after the due date. The company gives all customers a date by with time to pay their bills and failing that, they carry out routine disconnection exercises on all delinquent customers. 

Broken Agreement - GPL also disconnect customers who would have signed agreements /contracts to pay specific amounts of money on a regular basis to clear a Debt that was accumulated by them but they were unable to clear all at once.

Bypass and Tampering - Field investigations by GPL's Loss reduction crews would from time to time visit customers to ensure that the company's equipment is in working order and in doing so would encounter customer who would have connected themselves without the proper documentation or permission of the company, or would have attempted to reduce the efficiency of the measuring device either by direct interference (Tampering) or diversion (Bypass). 

Illegal Reconnection - Disconnected customers who are brave enough to reconnect their service themselves tend to suffer a different faith as they would most times by charged with an additional penalty  (Illegal Reconnection Fee) and or have their service removed if they are very persistent. 

System or Human Error - But like all systems, there is room for human error and customers do get disconnected because their payment was not processed in time or crew member disconnected the wrong line on the pole. In such incidents, the company evaluates the situation and takes the appropriate actions to have the incident addressed. 

Inaccessibility to Read Meter - There are also other less know ways and reason why GPL would also move to disconnect a customer. Should GPL meter reader be prevented from reading your meter because of your actions (locked building or premises) consecutively for three (3) months, they have the right according to law to disconnect such service.

Safety - GPL would also disconnect a service if there is an imminent threat to the customer's building or surroundings as a result of fire or accident. GPL would disconnect a customer's service for safety reasons.


GT&T Disconnections

Lets face it, we all at some point in time feel like we should not pay our phone bill and that we can talk forever but unlike GPL, GT&T disconnection is systematic. You are warned by the telephone company that your service has been temporarily disconnected when you pick up the receiver. 

GT&T as far as I can tell has the longest grace period. For the most part, bills are due just into the second week of each month. There after services are disconnected once balance is not cleared. Some customers happen to go on months owing for services rendered before the system eventually disconnects the service but this usually happens to DSL customers.


GWI Disconnections

The Guyana Water Incorporated  does disconnections for all accounts that are in arrears. Customers who fail to pay their accounts and or have not entered into a settlement arrangement with the Authority will have their service disconnected.

Time to time GWI employees will engage in field audits to verify the legitimacy of all connections in an area and those who's connections have no account with the authority, will be disconnected.

GPL's SHARE X WIN Promotion

GPL has recently launched another promotional campaign geared at sensitizing the public about getting their account information updated. The purpose of the exercise is to update GPL's customer data base with valid and current information to make future customer interactions better as the company would like to bring on board text and email notifications. Correct telephone numbers would enable better communication between the company and it's customers in cases of emergency visits or routine visits to read meter or carry out field investigations.

Many entities use and ask for proof of address and many times people would like to use a utility bill for such an occasion only to find out there is a mistake in the spelling of their name or the address they reside at. This contest offers the perfect opportunity to go in to GPL to address such problems and the best part is, you can be one of nine (9) prize winners.

How so you ask?

GPL will be getting updated and correct information about you the occupants of the premises and you the consumer will have a chance to address any corrections to your name that was spelt wrong, the bill that never gets delivered to you or never get there on time. 

The first step is to full up a coupon like the one shown here. Coupons are available from any GPL Commercial Office nation wide and from GPL's interactive website.  
  • You will need to enter the account holder's name (The name found on the light bill above the address). 
  • Next you will require the service address of the account (usually found below the name on the bill). 
  • Seeing that GPL provides a post paid and a pre-paid service, the next part is to be filled in accordingly. The customer number and account number (reference number) for post paid customers and the prepaid meter number for pre-paid customers. 
  • The stub also requires a contact number. It could be a land line or a cellphone telephone number. 
  • Lastly, you are required to enter an email address if you have one so as to be notified of any other promotional content that GPL has to offer.

GPL's E-Billing or GPL Smart Alert

The Guyana Power and Light Inc is the biggest supplier of electricity in the country and though it has been criticized for its bad service, the entity is making great effort to improve its customer service and total customer satisfaction. 

The company has embarked on a number of exercises to aid in the efficient delivery of bills to its customers as there are quite a few customers complaining of not receiving their bills and then only know of their balance when GPL turns up to disconnect and some times remove the service entirely,  to the dismay, disbelief, discomfort and public humiliation of the customer.

The company has long engaged customers over the phone on their Call Centre line 226-2606 where friendly staff are available to assist you with simple queries about bills, about applying for service and to inquire about the ever so frequent power outages that is always prevalent.



The company through their website and suggestion boxes, take willing applicants who wish to take advantage of the company's e-billing which will take a person's email address and deliver their bills to them rather than the bill coming through the postal system as it is intended to. The customer will no longer receive a mailed bill but an electric PDF file delivered to the email address they provided.The bill can then be printed by the customer so that they can proceed to any payment centre to pay the amount owed.
